Community Q&A: November 2013

Division agents,
We want to have an ongoing and open conversation with you; that’s why we regularly take the time to answer to your questions. Here’s a new batch of questions and answers!
Mehrk: "Will there be classes or is it a freeform design?"
As you play the game, you’ll level up and acquire points. You can spend those points to spec yourself as you wish: those choices are totally open, up to each player, and changeable on the fly. Of course, you’ll be able to spec yourself into a general RPG role (becoming more a “tank”, a “healer” or a “DPS” kind of character), but again the choice is yours. This means that communication and teamwork are important to have the best group possible!
Cabbagehead13: "Is there any non-lethal weaponry?"
Yes, there will be non-lethal weaponry available to both enemies and players. Smoke, to block line of sight and create diversions, is a good example.
Marcus (Hype Tank!): "It's been said your goal is to create "the most detailed NYC ever seen" - how are you working to make this possible?"
Having the most detailed NYC is definitely our goal. New York City is so diverse and we want people to feel that when they explore the environment. To create this “true NYC”, we have been putting a lot of effort into gathering meaningful reference, data and any information that will help realize our vision. We film, take pictures, record sound; going so far as to create mathematical models of resonance data based on real locations. This way, when you’re in our game, you will really hear and feel what it’s like to actually be there. Of course, we still have to take into consideration the experience of our gamers to make it as fun as possible; finding the right balance between realism and a compelling game experience.
LordCrash88: "If I want to play solo will it be very hard to survive or will the enemies (AI controlled) be weakened to reflect the party size?"
When you play coop, the enemies will be scaled in different ways to make sure that the challenge level is maintained (not too easy nor too hard). But there will also be special activities/encounter types that will be extra challenging for both groups and solo players (it will be clear to the players that these are harder).
Robin: "Will the shooting/combat system be focused on RPG features like skills, damage, statistics, and critical hits? Or will it be a more traditional skill-based shooter?"
We are an RPG first and foremost. So the emphasis for the game is definitely on skill/talent synergies along with your weapon characteristics. We are a Clancy game, we are also an open-world game but really we’re an RPG first. Gear will be important, levels will be important, modifications to weapons will be important… everything that makes a fantastic RPG will be important to the game.
Foxtrotoso2: "Is there a linear story progression or are we truly out in the world with freedom of gameplay?"
There’s a general storyline but how you unravel it is up to you: the content is emergent. When you’re out in the world there will be stories attached to emergent events, which may lead you in to the greater story. The player’s choice really is at the heart of the game!
Trandalfiz: "Will thirst or hunger come into effect while playing the game?"
It's important for us that it's not a "harsh" survival game. While finding food and water will be important in the game you won't starve or die if you don't come across them. You can read more about this in the latest Intelligence Annex.
Note: If you’re an avid forum user, you might have seen some of those answers already. ;)
See you next time for a new Q&A roundup!
Cheers,
The Division Dev Team

The Powers of inFAMOUS Second Son: Smoke vs. Neon

Sure when you play inFAMOUS Second Son, you're going to "enjoy your power."  But which one are you going to enjoy the most?
Delsin absorbs the ability to control Smoke in his hometown, and then goes to Seattle to find more conduits and gain their powers, starting with Neon.  These power sources have different strengths and weaknesses, requiring you to change up your tactics.  This has led to an ongoing debate on the design team about which power is actually the best.

Darren Bridges (Power Designer): Ok, is this really a debate?  Smoke is the clear winner.  There's nothing better than dashing in and choke-slamming some DUP stooge, then firing a Cinder Blast that destroys the tower his buddies are standing on.
Jaime Griesemer (Lead Designer): Sure, if you want to get your hands dirty, Smoke is great.  But Neon is clean and streamlined.  You're basically firing lasers out of your hands, so your're a natural sniper.  With Neon, combat is all about precision from a distance.  Each shot hits hard, especially if you're targeting the enemy's weak points.  Neon lets you dissect a squad of Dupes like a glowing purple surgeon.
Darren: Sniping is cool, but Smoke lets you travel through air vents and launch yourself out over the rooftops.  It turns the entire city into your own personal playground.  And smoke is everywhere -- if you run out, you just damage a car and get some more.  That's like being able to punch a cow and make hamburgers fly out.
Jaime: Interesting metaphor... But who needs to go on a "vent hunt" when you can just run straight up a wall, instead?! Neon gets you where you want to go, fast.  And enemies aren't going to be able to hit a streak of light.  Plus, draining Neon looks cooler.
DarrenOrbital Drop [...mic drop]
Jaime: Dude, Not fair.  You know PR won't let me talk about the Neon -- thing -- that you almost see right at the end of this new teaser video.
Enjoy the trailer!

CREATING YOUR PERFECT RIDE

When customizing your car, The Crew will allow you to tweak everything from your tires to your engine – but these options are about more than just statistics and performance. According to our creative director Julian Gerighty, the options presented to you in The Crew are there to help you establish an emotional connection between you and your car.
“The only car I’ve ever had was really not a great car, but I was attached to it. It was my space. I loved that car,” Gerighty told the UbiBlog. “It doesn’t matter that it wasn’t the greatest car in the world. It was my car. That’s something that’s very important to us.”

When bringing this idea to The Crew, our team worked hard to make sure that when you customize your car, you create a vehicle that’s distinctly yours. From its performance to its appearance, your car will feel like a machine that’s tailored specifically to you, giving you a chance to show off your personality and style when cruising through the U.S.

The Need for Speed Official Store is Live!

The Need for Speed Official Store is Live!

NOVEMBER 26, 2013

As you cruise around Redview County, chasing racers and slamming cops, something feels off. What is it you're missing? Is it the level 2 Shock
Ram? Is it the Marussia? Or is it something more... your very own Need for Speed Rivals hoodie, perhaps?
The power of Frostbite 3 is enough to immerse anyone in the Need for Speed world, but what really brings it home (literally) is wearing your favorite police department's shirt -- the RCPD shirt. Representing Redview County in game and out is an undeniable level of dedication that can only demand one thing: Respect. Whether you're laying down the law or breaking it, you might as well look great doing it.
Not
to mention, with holidays around the corner, maybe it's time to give mom some gift ideas (just don't forget the product link for our site). Better yet, get her a mug to match your impeccable NFS wardrobe. Dad might feel left out, best to snag a keychain while you're at it.
Regardless,
we've got your wish list covered. Check it out for yourself at the official store page and be sure to sign up for the Newsletter to get all the best info first.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Mobile Coming this December

Before GTAV took us to the sun-bleached sidewalks and humming concrete freeways of present-day Los Santos and beyond, there was Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the biggest GTA of the PS2 era. Now, head back to the early 90s with CJ and the Grove Street Families when Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas comes to mobile devices next month.

Encompassing Los Santos, San Fierro, Las Venturas and everything in between, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has been upgraded for its mobile release. Newly remastered graphics including dynamic and detailed shadows, greater draw distance, an enriched color palette, plus enhanced character and car models make this the best-looking version of San Andreas yet.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas also features brand new touch controls including contextual control options to display buttons only when you need them and three different control schemes for driving and maneuvering, as well as a reworked checkpoint system for easier progression. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for mobile also comes equipped with full controller support, including Made for iOS controller capability on iOS7. It will be available for select iOS, Android, Amazon Kindle and Windows Mobile devices. Stay tuned for more details in the weeks ahead.

Battlefield 4 Player Appreciation

Today we launched Battlefield 4 on Xbox One. With that console, we will have brought Battlefield 4 to no less than five platforms. It is amazing to see such a complex universe come to life across so many advanced hardware systems. Millions of people around the world are playing the game and seeing the tip of the iceberg of what the next generation has to offer. At DICE, we are committed to you, the fans, and view the game as a live service. I am extremely proud of the people at DICE and everyone across EA that contributed to the development of Battlefield 4. However, I am less proud to see that the game has experienced some turbulence during the launch period. While some platforms have had only minor problems, others have had more than their fair share of issues. Resolving the launch issues is our #1 priority. In fact, we are so serious that we have the entire team working to stabilize the game and we will not move on to other projects until we are sure that Battlefield 4 meets – and exceeds – your expectations. It is the right thing to do.
To show our appreciation for your patience as we work through these issues, we are announcing that from November 28 through December 5, we will reward all players with Double XP for every multiplayer match they complete. We understand that the launch issues may have impacted your progression, and we want to do everything we can to help you get back the XP that you may have lost. Also, to cap off the week, on December 5 we will give all players that log in to Battlefield 4 multiplayer a M1911 pistol scope. This special sidearm scope, previously reserved for our DICE developers, has a 3X zoom and is available for all classes in Battlefield 4.
You are the heart and soul of Battlefield. We thank you for your support in these early days of the launch, and will continue to show our appreciation as time goes on. To stay informed about the latest game updates, please visit us at Battlefield 4 Control Room or follow us on Twitter and Facebook.
Thank you,
Karl Magnus Troedsson
